Academic Dress Information

Do I have to wear Academic Dress to participate in my Graduation Ceremony?
Yes. You will be required to wear the prescribed academic dress for the award level in which you are graduating.
This includes a gown, a mortarboard, hood and/or stole in the appropriate faculty colour.

I am receiving a Double Degree, how do I order my Academic Dress?
If you are receiving a double degree, then you only need to attend one ceremony and place one order for academic dress.
The university will prescribe which colour hood you are required to wear on graduation day.

When do I hire my Academic Dress?
Academic Dress will be open for booking 4-6 weeks before your ceremony

How do I work out my Gown Size?
When you place your order online you will have the option to select your size from the size chart, this will allow us to ensure you have the correct size.

When do I return my Academic Dress?
Gowns must be returned after you have finalized your photographic and graduation services within 2 hours of the ceremony finishing.
Failure to return your Academic Dress within this period will incur a late fee. Please refer to the Terms & Conditions below.

Do I have to wear anything specific?
It is important to note the gown is open at the front; therefore what you are wearing underneath is visible. It is for this reason we recommend you wear business attire, and comfortable shoes. If the day is warm, you may want to remove your jacket as the gowns are quite heavy and it may be hot in the auditorium. Information regarding gown hire and academic dress rules can be found on the Graduations website.

How much will my Academic Dress hire cost?
The cost of academic dress hire is included in your graduation fee. For a coursework student, you keep your mortarboard as a souvenir mortarboard.

Terms and Conditions
Academic Dress Hire - Academic Dress MUST be booked a minimum of 3 days in advance of your ceremony day to avoid a late booking fee of $35.

*Graduates & Guests aged 16 or over must show proof of COVID-19 vaccination or an AIR immunisation medical exemption as a condition of entry

When do my guests and I have to be seated?

Your guest will also be able to enter the live site at the Northern plaza an hour before the ceremony.

All graduates and guests should be seated 30 minutes prior to commencement of the ceremony.

Do children need a ticket?
You can’t take your children with you on stage, and they can’t sit with you while you’re waiting to receive your award.
If you'd like your children to attend a ceremony, one of your guests will need to supervise them.

Children under one year of age have the option of:

  • sitting on your guest’s lap without a ticket or
  • sitting in their own ticketed seat.

Children one and older will need their own ticket for a seat.

For safety reasons, prams are not permitted in the hall, but may be parked in the designated area in the foyer at your own risk.

What are the 2 different ticket types?

Robert Blackwood Hall - Each graduate has been allocated two guest tickets for the Robert Blackwood Hall. Guests with this ticket will be able to enter the hall where the ceremony takes place.

Live Stream - Northern Plaza - Each graduate will also be allocated a ticket for the live viewing area at the Northern Plaza. This is a ticketed fenced off area at the Northern Plaza at Clayton campus where your guest will be able to enjoy the live stream of your ceremony.
